Research Findings

A survey conducted among 96 gamers.

Aged between 18 - 32.

This research shows the current phenomenon happening in the gaming community.

Toxic gaming behavior includes discrimination of other players in a video game, using foul language, racial slurs, griefing, gender inequality but is not limited to these characteristics and includes other similar behaviors.

A toxic player is someone who impacts other gamers in a negative way and is subjective depending on the scenario.

Gamers need to stop being toxic!

The survey was split into 4 sections.

All the participants were allowed to choose more than one role which resulted in a total of 64 victims, 30 perpetrators, 45 bystanders and 14 gamers not involved in toxic behaviors but still play esports games respectively.

Causes of toxic behaviors

The perpetrators stated that they become toxic to the point they inflict hurtful words and disrupt the gameplay for their teammates because:

They do not meet their expectations in terms of skill 

OR

having matched with a lower rank teammate and assuming the player is terrible in playing.

How to tackle toxic behaviors?

Making them realize the weight of their actions

Implement account bans or similar penalties with varying durations depending on the severity of the toxic action.
